Any punching the pedal to the metal would be instantly spun the car out. I had to slow down, gas the car moderately, pull of the grass, and then gradually accelerate. When you were tipped and/or shoved off the course and onto the grass, an entirely different set of strategies are required to remain stable, speedy, and in the race. The American muscle cars, I think I drove a Camaro or a Trans Am, was way heavier and less controllable. So, when you an opponent tips your end - an action that can be detrimental to your race - the Clio was a little easier to recover. These cars are small, tight-handling, and moderately fast. For instance, the first set of races settles you into a Clio race. The most amazing thing is that all the cars keep the excellent sense of handling, while driving entirely different.

TOCA Race Driver 3, as you'd expect at this point, brings Codemasters excellent car models, handling, and control to the forefront of the experience. The excellent graphics, superb physics and general variety of driving is so engaging and constant, you'll really pay little attention him, and a lot to the driving itself. Most of his comments were enjoyable to hear, but if you got pushed off into the grass like I did, or if you cheated, through a tight turn like I did more than once, his comments become repetitive. He warns you to stay off the "infield," he'll warn you when an opponent racer might not admire the fender smashing stunt on his car, and generally his advice remains based on fundamentals. This old guy will make you feel at home as you get your bearings on the throng of cars you're about to drive, and he'll continue to coach you through a headset while you're driving. The camera movement is active, following a live style set-up, the dialog is crisp, and the coach is goofy and chipper enough to believe for a while. He takes a swig of a soft drink and sets up realistic expectations for your career, and so forth. People are discussing tools and parts, your coach stops momentarily to let a slick F1 car pass by, as he walks backwards and leads you into his office. From a first-person view, you're led through a garage brimming with activity.

This story starts off with you, the silent type, losing a big race, and falling into the hands on an old Scottish coach.

It was a little too serious and a little less than interesting.
#TOCA RACE DRIVER 3 IGN PRO#
Pro Race Driver tried this back in 2002 with rather unimpressive results. The preview build we played today features another shot at the racing storyline. YES NO Since we last played the game, around mid-summer, numerous elements have come together.
#TOCA RACE DRIVER 3 IGN SERIES#
Racing styles new to the series range from Rally racing, -off-road racing, and historic vehicle racing. Combined, the two modes offer an enormous amount of racing challenges - 116 to be exact. Fine, pick World Tour, which divvies up a wide selection of racing challenges, with as many as 35 different motor racing styles, and when you're through and a particular racing style strikes your fancy, pick it and enter the Pro Career. Maybe you don't really have one and you're unsure. Structured similarly to Colin McRae Rally 05 and intermixed with some weird yet wonderful cutscenes led by your buoyant old racing coach, you'll have the immediate chance to pick a racing discipline: World Tour or Pro Career. You like GT racing? How about American muscle cars? Off-road trucks tickle your fancy? How about a little Formula 1? Open Wheel racing? Or perhaps you're a Colin McRae fan? Whether it's slick tarmac racing, off-road, or even rally racing, this game delivers all of them in a generous and impressive fashion.
#TOCA RACE DRIVER 3 IGN PC#
TOCA Race Driver 3, due to hit Xbox, PS2, and PC February 2006, basically combines everything that Codemasters has done to this point into one giant game. The variety alone is outstanding, but what makes the game so desirable is how smoothly and professionally the cars handle, differ, and feel. This year, Codemasters sort of blends the great features from those games into one game, TOCA Racer Driver 3, which suits the game perfectly, since the actual content focuses on a mix of car types, racing styles and challenges. Over the years the AAA-racer has taken on various names, from Pro Race Driver, TOCA, and Touring Car Challenge, to TOCA Race Driver one year it was even called Jarrett and LaBonte Stock Car Racing. Every year Codemasters tries something new and slightly unusual with its top-level racing simulation, TOCA.
